Akseli-Gallen Kallela: Cheetah
Oil, 1909-14, 125 x 143 cm
Mannerheim Museum.

In 1909-1910 Gallen-Kallela and his family travelled to British East Africa (present-day Kenya). This trip resulted in some 150 modernist paintings. In addition, Gallen-Kallela gathered zoological, botanical and ethnographic collections and undertook two hunting and painting safaris. Gallen-Kallela donated "Cheetah" to his friend, C. G. Mannerheim, who was Protector of State and later President of Finland.
