Akseli Gallen-Kallela: Self-portrait in a fresco.
Water colour, 1894, 31 x 23.5 cm
Private collection

This self-portrait showing the artist as if in a partly crumbling fresco prefigures his later frescoes and wall-paintings in many respects. In 1900 Gallen-Kallela painted his first frescoes for the Finnish pavilion at the Paris World Fair, which unfortunately could not be saved when the exposition was dismantled. The frescoes which Gallen-Kallela painted for the Jusélius mausoleum in Pori, Western Finland, in 1901-1903, were later destroyed in a fire.

Nice line!
