Akseli Gallen-Kallela: The Old Woman and the Cat.
Oil, 1885, 121 x 96.5 cm
Turku Art Museum.

Gallen-Kallela painted this uncompromising depiction of the common people in his youth, shocking the contemporary public. It shows an old "sheep-woman" of Salo clumsily demonstrating her affection to a cat. Gallen-Kallela described the model as follows: "The hard outdoor life had made her skin tough and had calloused her hands, and splayed her feet... She was a veritable autumnal rustic being, whose limbs were in no way pampered by indoor living."

Nice line!
