Akseli Gallen-Kallela: The Veldt Ablaze at Ukamba.
Oil, 1909, 13.5 x 17.5 cm
Private collection.

The works painted by Gallen-Kallela in Africa in 1909-1910 point to his amazing ability to renew his art. His modernistic Africa-themed paintings, executed in glowing colours and wide brush-strokes, first raised eyebrows in Finland. The painter of national themes had begun to interpret life in Africa!

"It was only when I came to the equatorial regions that my desire to paint again arose... I stayed there from the very first moment, and hardly a day passed when I didn't paint or draw something... Like most explorers who really begin to study Africa, I succumbed to its charms."

Nice line!
