Akseli Gallen-Kallela: Shepherd Boy from Paanajärvi.
Oil, 1892, 85 x 118 cm
The Finnish National Gallery Ateneum.

In the summer of 1892 Akseli Gallen Kallela and his family travelled to Paanajärvi in Kuusamo, Northern Finland. The model for this painting was the 16-year-old shepherd of the village, who had also gained repute as a bear-hunter. "There is the mysterious and romantic mood of the summer night. And for all its realism, this painting of the young man is romantic. It depicts the hard life of the wilderness and nature - strikingly beautiful but severe causing man to struggle endlessly against the night frosts and wild beasts."

Nice line!
