Boundary Crossings
Temporal Dialogues in Finnish Landscape Photography

This book discusses themes of locality and regionality. Its starting point is the geographer J. G. Granö’s (1882-1956) photographic work from his research expeditions in Eurasia. Granö’s interpretation of the landscape meets the ideas of three contemporary photographers, Taneli Eskola, Jorma Puranen and Pentti Sammallahti. These photographers have studied the cultural landscape of the Skolt Sami and the nomads of Central Asia.

ten minutes past midnight – Arno Rafael Minkkinen Akseli Gallen-Kallelan vieraana

The Finnish-American photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen is particularly known for his nude self-portraits, in which the artist's body is presented as part of the landscape and the natural environment. The Drum and the Camera

The Drum and the Camera approaches shamanism from the perspective of contemporary photography. The work of the artist as seeing, experiencing and passing on internal and deeper knowledge is compared to the role of the shaman. Ancient nature worship and shamanism have always been important aspects of the conceptions shared by Finns. A good shaman knew the healing powers of nature. He passed on the old lore of his community and created new knowledge. The artist-shamans of today are seeking the lost contact with nature that appears to have been severed by the predominance of industry and science. The artist also has the important role of producing elements to heal and compose our fragmented egos, to transcend the boundaries of the mind.

Tyytymättömät muusat
– Tyko Sallinen, Åke Mattas ja Heikki Alitalo Akseli Gallen-Kallelan vieraana

Published in Finnish, this book, entitled "Dissatisfied Muses" tells of the expressionists Tyko Sallinen, Åke Mattas and Heikki Alitalo. Tyko Sallinen was the first full-blooded expressionist in Finnish art, whose path was followed by Åke Mattas and later by Heikki Alitalo. This, however, did not involve a process of plagiarism but an approach to similar phenomena, an appreciation of the same laws and regularities of art and their interpretation with expressionist means.
