Index of works, sketch-book card index and the drawings collection index

The Gallen-Kallela Museum keeps an index of works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, containing information on his oeuvre of thousands of works in fine and applied art. The index of works is the main body of reliable information for identifying works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

The index is based on lists of works prepared during Gallen-Kallela’s lifetime by the artist himself and his close circle. Systematic additions have been made to them at the museum with checked information from lists of exhibited works. The index of works is updated in association with auction houses. Information on the owners of works is confidential.

In addition to the index of works, the museum has card files for researchers concerning Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s sketchbooks (64 sketchbooks, 2,327 index cards on drawings) and his drawings (1,700 index cards) in private collections. The card files are based on documentation of Gallen-Kallela’s works carried out by Professor Onni Okkonen and his research assistant Annikki Toikka-Karvonen.

The index of works and card files on the sketchbooks and the drawings collection are available for research use at the Gallen-Kallela Museum by appointment.
