The making of the 3D model of Tarvaspää.
Our project began with a study of the material, consisting of hundreds of building designs drafted by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Some were for Tarvaspää and some for other buildings.
Our team of four persons was divided into two, with one pair working on a reconstruction of the existing building, and the other studying the unrealised parts and deciding on what would be included in the 3D model.
There are no complete floor plans of the house even in its present state, and therefore we made use of a large number of photographs that we took on site. Google Earth was of great help for establishing the shape of the terrain and perceiving its proportions.
We studied the ethics of digital reconstruction and considered how to mark a clear difference between reality and the results that were orchestrated by us. We chose to test a technology that was new to us, which would permit a relatively concrete visualisation of the different versions in the same space. This involves the use of an object marker, a physical object, to mark the starting point of the augmented reality application. We envisioned for the beginning of the museum experience a scale model based on the present state of the museum to which colours are added in the augmented reality application. The viewer can continue from there to our version of the unrealised parts and study the material on which it is based.
We made use of the application’s possibility to easily display the draft designs that were the basis for our work. We also wanted to show the finer photographs that were taken at the time when the building was completed. In this way we included in the small device more content and background for our project. We hope visitors to the exhibition will notice the scale model and its viewing application.
This project was carried out by us as part of our studies in the Metropolia XR Design programme: Karolina Norteva, Laura Kankkunen, Toni Manninen ja Daria Poryadina.
